A Patient Referral Program can be A Key to Success

Word of mouth marketing can be one of the most effective ways to attract new patients. In my practice, referrals from existing patients now account for almost two-thirds of new business.  This data is especially significant in light of the fact that the cost of gaining a new patient from patient referrals was only 10% of that compared to the cost of bringing in a new patient from other marketing efforts.

Top Three Ways to Stand Out in Business

When I started my business in my small town, I was the only audiologist in the county. Now, thirty plus years later, there are seven competitors within seven miles.  It has become increasingly difficult, not to mention expensive, to stand out in the sea of competition.  Sometimes I wonder if it’s possible to get noticed.

Of course it is!  It may take a little more creativity and more emphasis certainly has to be placed on social media but it is still possible to get your message to your potential patients but you won’t do it if you advertise like everyone else.

  1. Be Honest About Your Products and Services. Honesty is not just the best policy; it should be your main policy. Can’t deliver by a due date? Call and let your buyers know. One of your field reps messed up on a bid? Immediately have a tough conversation with your client. Lying to customers is like shooting yourself in the foot. If your customers catch you lying, they will lose faith in you and may even spread negative feedback about your business. One common form of dishonesty in business is failing to share bad news. In reality, the faster you share bad news, the more your customers will respect you. Just make sure you follow up with solutions as mentioned in #2 above.
  1. Come Up With Something New. Continue to reinvent your company by adopting emerging technologies and introducing new processes, products and solutions. For example, make use of social media and mobile apps as a growing number of buyers prefer to find and work with you through their phones. There have been many examples of people coming up with unique ideas that have made a lasting impression, such as a real Santa Claus in Birmingham. All of these attention-grabbers help businesses stand out from the crowd; however, to be effective the underlying product or service must be at least up to par.

Hiring & Firing – Who needs it?

I have seen several posts recently questioning when to hire an employee and what the pay and benefit package should be. The answers from colleagues have been interesting and very diverse. This prompted me to do some investigation.

It’s OK to be generous, but it’s important that the pay is appropriate for the position. There are many resources on the web but some of them lead to sites that want you to hire them to be your employee manager or to post jobs. The most unbiased and independent site I have found is the Occupational Outlook Handbook – Bureau of Labor Statistics https://www.bls.gov/ooh/. It gives the average wage for every occupation and can be sorted by geographical location.

Wishing don’t make it so …

If I had one wish, what would it be?  A fabulous vacation, a long, healthy life, world peace or perhaps it would be something simple like diamonds! Well, of course, I wish for good health for myself and my family and friends and who wouldn’t like to see the world working peacefully together? Diamonds are nice but not always practical when there are so many other things to invest in.  But if I could be granted only one wish it would be for more time!  No matter how early I rise or how late I stay up, there are just never enough hours in a day to get my work done.  I bet many of you feel exactly the same way!

Overwhelming Opinions

I Like Your Opinion ManI must admit I’ve spent some sleepless nights lately thinking about the future of business, namely MY business. Insurance companies are turning over their hearing benefits to internet providers, new OTC (over the counter) legislation, and more competition from everywhere – all quite unsettling. What to do? What programs should I participate with?”

OTCs – How do we Win?

The fact is “Over the Counter” (OTC) hearing aids are here to stay. As a person that tries to be ahead of the curve, I investigate and contemplate how to handle this new era in hearing healthcare.

I’m sitting here with my current price sheet trying to determine what to change. Unbundle? Itemize? Stay the same? I agree with the looming voices that say “Change is needed,” but what’s the best approach? When things are going well in business, I don’t think it’s prudent to completely upset the apple cart, but I do agree that we have to show value for all the services we provide and demystify what’s included in the investment in a Hearing Rehabilitation Plan.

I have an unbundling option and the people that choose it don’t return for regular visits, so I believe that unbundling in an established practice will result in reduced revenue for a period of time.  That’s fine if the business can survive without that revenue and if it can’t then increased marketing dollars will be necessary to attract new patients to make up that lost revenue.
