Hiring & Firing – Who needs it?

I have seen several posts recently questioning when to hire an employee and what the pay and benefit package should be. The answers from colleagues have been interesting and very diverse. This prompted me to do some investigation.

It’s OK to be generous, but it’s important that the pay is appropriate for the position. There are many resources on the web but some of them lead to sites that want you to hire them to be your employee manager or to post jobs. The most unbiased and independent site I have found is the Occupational Outlook Handbook – Bureau of Labor Statistics https://www.bls.gov/ooh/. It gives the average wage for every occupation and can be sorted by geographical location.

Wishing don’t make it so …

If I had one wish, what would it be?  A fabulous vacation, a long, healthy life, world peace or perhaps it would be something simple like diamonds! Well, of course, I wish for good health for myself and my family and friends and who wouldn’t like to see the world working peacefully together? Diamonds are nice but not always practical when there are so many other things to invest in.  But if I could be granted only one wish it would be for more time!  No matter how early I rise or how late I stay up, there are just never enough hours in a day to get my work done.  I bet many of you feel exactly the same way!

Overwhelming Opinions

I Like Your Opinion ManI must admit I’ve spent some sleepless nights lately thinking about the future of business, namely MY business. Insurance companies are turning over their hearing benefits to internet providers, new OTC (over the counter) legislation, and more competition from everywhere – all quite unsettling. What to do? What programs should I participate with?”

OTCs – How do we Win?

The fact is “Over the Counter” (OTC) hearing aids are here to stay. As a person that tries to be ahead of the curve, I investigate and contemplate how to handle this new era in hearing healthcare.

I’m sitting here with my current price sheet trying to determine what to change. Unbundle? Itemize? Stay the same? I agree with the looming voices that say “Change is needed,” but what’s the best approach? When things are going well in business, I don’t think it’s prudent to completely upset the apple cart, but I do agree that we have to show value for all the services we provide and demystify what’s included in the investment in a Hearing Rehabilitation Plan.

I have an unbundling option and the people that choose it don’t return for regular visits, so I believe that unbundling in an established practice will result in reduced revenue for a period of time.  That’s fine if the business can survive without that revenue and if it can’t then increased marketing dollars will be necessary to attract new patients to make up that lost revenue.

Is Fabulous in your Business Plan?

I am a pretty demanding person – not a surprise to many – and I have never been satisfied with “average” or “fine” in any part of my life. I never seek out an average restaurant, or a mediocre experience or even an ordinary pair of shoes. I have always pursued Fabulous. This includes the way that I conduct my business. And now in almost 2019, Fabulous has become even more important because it is one way of separating a business from the sea of ever increasing competition. It’s not easy to WOW a patient but providing exceptional service is one way to seduce a patient and it’s something most patients will actually pay extra for.

4 Hurdles Every Hearing Healthcare Professional needs to get Over (Series): Thinking a Business will Run Itself

The fact is that most hearing healthcare professionals spend 99% of their time working in their businesses and little time working on their businesses.  Most owners think they may need to be around to get the business going, but after it’s established it should pretty much run itself.  If you want a good business, it won’t just run itself. You may survive (and even thrive) in spite of yourself, but you won’t have the business you COULD have if you don’t watch your numbers.
